15 July 2024

On 2 July 2024, the lawyer of human rights defender Dauletmurat Tajimuratov, Sergey Mayorov, filed a complaint in order to change the conditions of the human rights defender’s detention. The complaint outlined a continued ill-treatment of Dauletmurat Tajimuratov in the high-security prison.

On 28 November 2023, Dauletmurat Tajimuratov’s lawyer Sergey Mayorov visited the human rights defender in Navoi prison colony. The lawyer reported that Dauletmurat Tajimuratov is being ill-treated by the prison administration.

13 January 2022

On 3 March 2021, Elżbieta Podleśna, Anna Prus and Joanna Gzyra-Iskandar were acquitted by the court of Plock of the charges of “offending religious beliefs” under article 196 of the Criminal Code of Poland. The charges were brought against the women human rights defenders in response to their posting of stickers and posters depicting the Virgin Mary with a rainbow halo to promote LGBTIQ+ rights. The costs of the trial will be borne by the state.

25 May 2018

On 22 May 2018, fifteen pro-democracy human rights defenders, including Anon Nampa, Rangsiman Rome, Sirawith Seritiwat, Chonticha Jaengrew and Piyarat Chongthep, were arrested and charged with sedition, with violating the junta’s ban on political gatherings of five people or more, and under the Road Traffic Act for participating in peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations in Bangkok.

8 January 2021

On 5 January 2021, a court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced journalists and human rights defenders Le Huu Minh Tuan and Nguyen Tuong Thuy to eleven years in prison. A third journalist, Pham Chi Dung was sentenced to fifteen years. The human rights defenders were charged with making and disseminating propaganda against the state.

20 January 2021

On 20 January 2021, woman human rights defender Consolee Mukirania, and fellow LUCHA members Kasereka Muhetsya Eze, Kakule Mutsuva Clovis, Mbusa Kikene Elie, Muhindo Vagheni Aziz, Nzila Patrick Pierre, Mumbere Sikuli Delivrance and Lwanzo Nasereka Kahongya were acquitted of all charges of “rebellion” and subsequently released.

17 August 2023

On 15 August 2023, human rights defender Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja was denied a prearranged video call with his daughter days after he was rushed to the intensive care unit where doctors declared his life was in danger. Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja is in imminent danger of losing his life sincehe has started a water-only hunger strike on 9 August 2023 in protest against his continued imprisonment and denial of access to adequate medical treatment.

25 August 2023

On 21 August 2023, a group of assailants attacked the participants of a candlelit vigil organised by the Right Side NGO in Yerevan, Armenia. The vigil aimed to commemorate Adriana, a transgender woman who was brutally murdered in her apartment the previous day. Woman human rights defender and head of the Right Side NGO Lilit Martirosyan filed a complaint to the police following the attack.

25 January 2021

On 28 January 2021, the Misdemeanour Court in Tunis acquitted human rights defender Ahmed Ghram.

On 17 January 2021, Tunisian police raided the house of human rights defender Ahmed Ghram and arrested him. Ahmed Ghram is facing the charge of 'incitement to civil disobedience', regarding several of his Facebook posts, one of which he shared on the same day he was detained.

2 August 2018

On 26 July 2018, a sedition case was filed against 20 people, including human rights defender Father Stan Swamy, for posting critical statements against the Jharkhand State Government, accusing the defender of inciting tension amongst adivasi (indigenous) people on the topic of the divisive Pathalgadi movement.

13 April 2021

On 23 March 2021, the Military Commander of Hebron canceled the Military order to confiscate parts of human rights defenders Imad and Fayza Abu Shamsiyya’s house.    

On 3 February 2021, the lawyer of human rights defenders Fayza Abu Shamsiyya and Imad Abu Shamsiyya informed them that the Military commander of Hebron had rejected their appeal against a military order which declares sections of their house in Tel Al-Ramida as a closed military zone.

5 February 2021

On 3 February 2021, human rights defenders and members of the Office for the Rights of People with Disabilities Siarhei Drazdouski and Aleh Hrableuski were detained and interrogated by the Investigative Committee. After the interrogation Aleh Hrableuski was detained for three days and Siarhei Drazdouski was placed under house arrest.

6 September 2023

On 3 September 2023, the lawyer of human rights defenders Jafar Ebrahimi and Kamyar Fakour announced that they have been charged with “disturbing the public order” and “insulting the prison authorities” at Branch 3 of Evin prison court. Both human rights defenders were forcibly transferred to Qezel Hesar prison from Evin prison on the same day, as part of a group of at least ten prisoners.

16 February 2021

On 13 February 2021, two women human rights defenders Najmeh Vahedi and Hoda Amid were informed of the verdict issued by the Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals on 2 February 2021. The appeals court ruled to uphold the primary ruling of Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, issued in late October 2020, sentencing Hoda Amid to eight years in prison whilst Najmeh Vahedi was sentenced to seven years.

9 August 2023

On 20 July 2023, the Criminal Court of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq sentenced the Kurdish human rights defender and journalist Sherwan Sherwani to an additional four years imprisonment for the alleged falsifying and forging of a document submitted to the prison’s administration.

On 28 April 2021, the Appeal Court of Erbil confirmed the six years' imprisonment sentence for human rights defender Sherwan Sherwani.

9 August 2023

On 28 July 2023, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to human rights defenders Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, accused in the Bhima Koregaon case in 2018.

On 14 February 2020, an order was passed to move the investigation on the Bhima Koregaon case to the National Investigation Agency court in Mumbai. The next court hearing is set for 28 February 2020. Meanwhile, all nine human rights defenders have been transferred to Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.

12 May 2021

The retrial hearing of Erol Önderoğlu, Şebnem Korur Fincancı and Ahmet Nesin, scheduled to take place on 6 May 2021, was postponed by the court due to pandemic measures. The hearing has been rescheduled for 30 September 2021.

On 3 November 2020, Istanbul Regional Court of Appeal in Istanbul publicly announced its decision to overturn the acquittal verdict of three human rights defenders, Şebnem Korur Fincancı, Erol Önderoglu and Ahmet Nesin.

9 October 2023

On 5 October 2023, human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam’s residence in Manipur, India was vandalized by unidentified perpetrators. Hours prior to the attack Babloo Loitonbam was threatened by a militant group named ‘Meitei Leepun’ who called for the human rights defender to be boycotted.

19 June 2024

On 17 June 2024, the Homiel District Court sentenced human rights defender Leanid Sudalenka to 5 years of prison time in absentia and fined him 650 base rates (approximately EUR 7,500). The Court found him guilty of "facilitating extremist activity", an offence envisaged by parts 1 and 2 of Article 361-4 of the Belarusian Criminal Code. The human rights defender and his lawyers will appeal this decision.

28 November 2023

On 7 November 2023, human rights defender and journalist Valasingham Krishnakumar was served a notice by the Batticaloa police informing him of a case filed against him at the Eravur Magistrate Court. This legal action stems from his involvement in a protest held on 8 October 2023 by Tamil farmers of the Mathavanai and Mylathamadu areas against the encroachment of pastureland by illegal settlers. Valasingham Krishnakumar had visited the protest site and reported on the peaceful campaign by the farmers.

20 April 2021

On 12 April 2021, the home and office of Tanya Hatsura-Yavorska were searched a second time by law enforcement officers, following the first search on 5 April 2021. During the three-hour raid, old documents and phones no longer in use were confiscated. Volodymyr Yavorskyy, prominent Ukrainian human rights defender and lawyer, and Tanya Hatsura-Yavorska’s husband, was in the house during the raid, following which he was taken for questioning. During the interrogation, Volodymyr Yavorskyy was subjected to physical and psychological abuse and was denied access to his lawyer.
