23 July 2024

On 08 January 2024, human rights defender Haris Azhar and woman human rights defender Fatia Maulidiyanti were acquitted of criminal defamation charges by the East Jakarta District Court.

On 6 March 2023, the case file for alleged defamation charges faced by woman human rights defender Fatia Maulidiyanti and human rights defender Haris Azhar was declared complete (a status known as P21 in Indonesia) and handed over to the East Jakarta District Attorney's Office.

11 July 2024

On 10 July 2024, women human rights defenders Zohreh Dadres and Zahra Dadres were arrested and transferred to Lakan prison. Zohreh Dadres was arrested in her parent’s house, without any prior summons to begin serving her sentence.

On 28 May 2024, Branch 11 of the Rasht Revolutionary Court of appeals confirmed the verdict of Branch 3 of the Rasht Revolutionary Court regarding a group of human rights defenders in the Gilan province without convening a session.

9 September 2021

On 3 September 2021, the first court hearing regarding the case of human rights defenders Leanid Sudalenka, Maryia Tarasenka and Taciana Lasica took place at Centralny District Court in Gomel. The human rights defenders face charges of “organising, financing, training and preparation of actions grossly violating public order and financing such activities” under parts 1 and 2 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code. If convicted, they could face up to three years of imprisonment.

17 September 2021

On 13 September 2021 woman human rights defender and lawyer Farzaneh Zilabi was sentenced by ‌‌Branch 2 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban on the charge of “propaganda activities against the state.” The woman human rights defender’s lawyer stated that they will appeal this sentence.

2 April 2019

On 3 April 2019, human rights defenders, who in 2018 co-signed a letter calling for the dismissal of Miguel Zuluaga, then in charge of the security of the Uruguayan national football team, were called to testify before the Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General de la Nación) in Montevideo in a case against human rights defender Richard Mariani. Richard Mariani is facing a defamation lawsuit that was brought against him by Miguel Zuluaga.

25 January 2021

On 10 June 2018, the investigative judge in case 173 (known as the NGO Foreign Funding Case) ordered the release of Dr. Magda Adly, co-founder of El Nadeem Centre on bail with a 20,000 Egyptian pound guarantee.

On 9 February, the offices of El Nadeem Center for  Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture were sealed off by police. In the process, the police officers arrested the building janitor.

9 June 2024

On 9 June 2024, Palestinian human rights defender Bassem Tamimi was released from prison by Israeli authorities, after having been held for almost 8 months in administrative detention at Ramon Prison without any charges or a trial.

On 25 April 2024, Israeli authorities issued a new 6-month administrative detention order against human rights defender Bassem Tamimi. A judicial review hearing to confirm the new order is scheduled for 7 May 2024.

7 October 2021

On 30 September 2021, the Court of First Instance of Chiquimula named five defenders of indigenous peoples’ rights for investigation, three of them members of the Maya Ch'orti' de Olopa Indigenous Council of the municipality of Olapa, department of Chiquimula. María Mendez, Bernardino Pérez, Juan Agustín, Santos Gerónimo Ramos Méndez and Rosa Margarita Pérez Canán will remain under house arrest pending investigations by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

Zainab Al-Khamees was prevented from travel on 15 October 2017 while en route to the Dublin Platform, an event held by Front Line Defenders. The human rights defender was summoned to report to the Public Prosecutor on 16 October 2017.

10 February 2023

On 10 February 2023, Shapour Ehsanirad was released from Evin prison. Since 4 February 2023, as part of a general amnesty announced by the Iranian judiciaryon the occasion of 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, hundreds of prisoners including human rights defenders have been released from prison.

2 February 2022

On 24 January 2022, woman human rights defender Atena Daemi was released from Lakan prison, in Rasht. The woman human rights defender was granted an “early release warrant” allowing her an unconditional release based on Art. 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, according to which “a convict must serve the most severe single sentence, in case of multiple sentencing”. The early release warrant was signed by the provincial responsible judge at Gilan Office of Implementation of Sentences Department.

On 18 June 2024, Narges Mohammadi’s lawyer announced that Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court has sentenced the woman human rights defender to one additional year in prison on the charge of “propaganda activities against the state.”

29 October 2024

On 20 October 2024, Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced human rights defender Taher Naghavi to six years in prison. The human rights defender, who has been detained since 6 February 2024, was sentenced to five years in prison on the charge of “gathering and collusion against the national security” and one year in prison on the charge of “propaganda activities against state.”

16 January 2023

On 13 January 2023, Mytilene Appeals Court Greece officially dropped charges against 24 human rights defenders. This included aid workers Sean Binder, Nassos Karakitsos, Sara Mardini. The charges stem from work carried out by the human rights defenders in Greece where they assisted in migrant crossings to the island of Lesvos. As a result, they found themselves charged with “people smuggling” as well as “money laundering”, “espionage” and “membership in a criminal organisation”.

On 21 July 2025, Esmail Gerami was released from the Great Tehran Prison. The human rights defender had served a one-year prison sentence on the charge of “propaganda against state” issued in July 2024.

22 August 2024

On 15 August 2024, Ukrainian woman human rights defender Iryna Horobtsova was sentenced to 10.5 years in a Russian penal colony after a four-month closed-door trial. Iryna Horobtsova was found guilty of alleged espionage and charged under Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. This sentencing follows her abduction on 13 May 2022 by Russian military forces in Kherson, where she was targeted for her humanitarian work and public support for Ukraine during Kherson's occupation

On 26 August 2024, woman human rights defender Soma Pourmohammadi was acquitted from the charge of “forming groups and associations with the intention of disturbing national security” by the Court of Appeal. The ten-year sentence previously issued by Branch 1 of the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court in mid-April 2024 was also overturned.

19 January 2022

On 14 January 2022, human rights defender Narendra Mohanty, was arrested by Odisha police officers at Dhinkia, in the state of Odisha. His arrest was due to his support for the peaceful protest by the local community against the forcible destruction of their betel vine plantations. Police reportedly violently repressed the protest, injuring many including women and children, and baton charged those present. Narendra Mohanty and two community leaders were arrested, alongside with over 500 villagers from the protest site.

10 March 2022

On 11 February 2022, Egyptian human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek started a hunger strike in protest of his unlawful detention. This is the second time that the human rights defender has gone on hunger strike.

On 17 January 2021, human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek was transferred to Tora Prison hospital due to a deterioration in his health after being on hunger strike for more than 40 days.

On 3 December 2020, Egypt’s State Public Prosecutor ordered the detention of human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek for 15 days.

Between 14 November 2024 and 22 November 2024, three prominent Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) had their activities in Ethiopia suspended by the Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO), without prior warning and with immediate effect. The organisations were targeted on the basis that, according to the ACSO, their activities undermine the interests of the public and the State.
