Richard Mariani
Richard Mariani is a football player and a human rights defender. He is the President of the Directive Commission of Rebeldía Organizada (Organised Rebelliousness), a civilian association that promotes human rights and solidarity, who works on the fight against impunity of perpetrators of crimes against humanity during Uruguay’s dictatorship. Richard Mariani has been recognised for his work on the defence of human rights since 2015, and since then has been working to promote women’s rights, children rights, access to justice and the exercise of cultural rights in Uruguay.
Uruguay is largely respectful of human rights and has taken steps in recent years to address crimes committed during the period of military dictatorship and to pass legislation respecting sexual and reproductive rights.
