On the 7th anniversary of the peaceful popular movement of the Bahraini people which started on 14 February 2011, the NGOs called on the international community to help free human rights defenders in Bahrain, some of whom are jailed for life, and to stop the persecution of journalists simply for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. On 05 February 2018, Abdulhadi's wife Khadija Al-Mousawi tweeted that she visited her husband  who has been targeted and abused in Jaw prison and has been taken to hospital in shackles.

7 April 2020

On 5 April 2020, human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang was released from a prison in Linyi, Shandong province, after completing his sentence. Upon Wang Quanzhang's release, the authorities did not allow him to return to Beijing where he had worked and lived with his wife, woman human rights defender Li Wenzu (李文足), and their son, before his arrest in 2015. Instead, he was taken back to his hometown Jinan, also in Shandong province, a city over 400km south of Beijing, for a 14-day "precautionary quarantine".

27 March 2023

Human rights defender Hu Shigen completed his 7.5-year sentence on 23 March 2023 and returned to his home in Beijing on 26 March 2023.

On 3 August 2016, human rights defender Mr Hu Shigen was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of 'subversion of state power' by a court in Tianjin province. Hu Shigen has been in custody since 9 July 2015 when scores of people were detained by police in a nationwide sweep targeting human rights defenders.

On 25 August 2017, the First District Court of Tlaxcala, in Mexico, confirmed the arrest warrants issued on 6 May 2014 for human rights defenders Juan Carlos Flores Solis, Adela Villalba Ramos, Eusebio Aguilar Torres, and Alejandro Torres Chocolatl for allegedly committing the crimes of ‘illegal deprivation of liberty with aggravated violence against a public servant’ and ‘belonging to a gang’.

7 February 2023

On Wednesday, 18 January 2023, journalist and woman human rights defender Arroi Baraket appeared before the judge in The Court of First Instance of Tunis, after a series of postponed hearings. The Court found Arroi Baraket guilty on the charges of assault and "extreme violence against a public official". The woman human rights defender was ordered to pay a fine of TND 200 (approximately EUR 60) and an indemnity to the police officer of TND 1300 (approximately EUR 394).

12 June 2020

On 9 June 2020, Nabeel Rajab was conditionally released from prison. The human rights defender had been imprisoned since June 2016. On 21 February 2018, the Criminal Court of Bahrain sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment, after he had already spent two years in prison regarding media interviews he gave in 2015 and 2016.

On 31 December 2018, the Bahraini Supreme Court upheld a 5-year sentence against Nabeel Rajab.

On 14 September 2023, human rights defenders Adilur Rahman and A.S.M Nasiruddin Elan were sentenced for two years of jail by the Cyber Tribunal of Dhaka. The human rights defenders are Secretary and Director of Odhikar, a renowned human rights organisation documenting human rights violations in Bangladesh.

2 August 2024

On 1 August 2024, Bronislav Danylovych, the father of imprisonment woman human rights defender and journalist Iryna Danylovych, passed away at the age of 78 after a long battle with cancer. Bronislav Danylovych was a main force in advocating for his daughter’s release and was dedicated to the cause of human rights.

2 May 2017

On 6 June 2017, Ofer Military Court dropped the charge of disturbing the soldiers and convicted him to 6 months in prison for participating in an illegal demonstration and entering a closed military zone. The Court suspended the sentence for one year. Mohammed Khatib's lawyer appealed this verdict.

On 8 September 2016, the Appeal Court confirmed the Seoul District Court's first decision, which indicted human rights defenders Mr. Lae-goon Park and Hye-jin Kim, in relation to their participation to a series of protests in solidarity with the Sewol ferry tragedy victims. On 22 January 2016, the court sentenced Mr. Lae-goon Park to three years in prison, with four years of probation and 160 hours of community service, and Ms. Hye-jin Kim to two years in prison, with three years of probation and 120 hours of community service.

On 12 September 2022, the Calcutta High Court quashed a criminal charge against human rights defender Kirity Roy, which was filed against him by the West Bengal police in 2018. The criminal offense listed under Section 186 of the Indian Penal Code, relates to voluntarily obstructing public servants in discharge of their public functions.

On 17 January 2024, Atekeh Rajabi was released from Vakilabad prison in Mashhad after having served two months of a six-month prison sentence.

On 25 November 2023, Atekeh Rajabi began a six-month sentence in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad, in the Central Khorasan province in Iran. This corresponds to a summons from the implementation department of Branch 21 of Mashhad Criminal and Revolutionary court received by the human rights defender on 15 November 2023.

On 28 July 2025, Ahmed Douma was summoned by the Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP). After a lengthy interrogation, he was released on bail, but his case remains ongoing. This incident of judicial harassment is a part of a broader pattern of reprisals against Ahmed Douma since his release from prison in 2023, which includes repeated summons, surveillance, and a travel ban.

On 19 February 2025, Mohammad Habibi was released from Evin prison, after having served his sentence. The human rights defender, who began serving his six-month prison sentence in November 2024, had been imprisoned several times since 2018 for his human rights work, including his trade union activities.

24 April 2026

On 17 April 2026, Sudanese judicial authorities initiated criminal proceedings against woman human rights defender and lawyer Rehab Mubarak, under charges of disseminating information deemed harmful to national security. Authorities in Sudan have issued an arrest warrant against her and taken steps to dismiss her from the Sudanese Bar Association. These measures were followed by a coordinated incitement and defamation campaign.

On 26 March 2023, the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy informed the Palestinian human rights group Lawyers for Justice of their final decision to not renew the registration of their organisation as a civil company. According to the Ministry, the decision is based on a request from the Palestinian General Intelligence Service (GIS) to freeze the registration of the organisation.

On 13 April 2026, prominent human rights defender and lawyer Yu Wensheng was released from Zhenjiang Prison in Jiangsu province after completing a three-year prison sentence. He was convicted and detained based on unfounded charges of “inciting subversion of state power.”

On 9 April 2026, the Advisory Chamber for Misdemeanours in Badr and El Shorouk ordered the extension of the detention of writer, poet, and human rights defender Ahmed Douma for a further 15 days pending investigations on charges of ‘spreading false news.’
