On 27 January 2018, Mohamed Aldouma's legal representatives reported that the defender was transferred to Shala Prison in El Fasher, Darfur. They further reported that Mohamed Aldouma has been subjected to ill-treatment in detention and is in need of regular medical care to treat his chronic osteoarthritis.
Sudanese authorities are continuing a nationwide crackdown against protesters and human rights defenders, through arrests and the use of excessive force resulting in killings. Mohamed Aldouma was arrested during a demonstration in Omdurman on 17 January.
Following her detention on 16 January, human rights defender Amal Habani was beaten with an electric rod by Sudanese forces during interrogation. She remains in detention despite an order for her release being issued on 20 January.
On 8 August 2018, Butch Rosales, human rights defender and Rise-Up volunteer was shot and killed in broad daylight on his way to Mandaue, Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province.
On 22 December 2017, Istanbul Anatolia Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office concluded the indictment for the murders of Syrian human rights defenders Orouba Barakat and Halla Barakat and called for the imposition of two sentences of life imprisonment under the charge of “intentional killing” according to the Turkish Criminal Code, Article 82.
On 30 September 2017, Turkish police arrested a suspect in the killing of Syrian human rights defenders Orouba and Halla Barakat.
On 23 November 2018, human rights defender Raed Fares was shot dead by unknown assailants in the Kafranbel, a town close to Idlib in northwestern Syria.
On 25 October, land rights defender Noel Castillo Aguilar was killed in the community of Barra de la Cruz in the municipality of Santiago Astata, Oaxaca. Noel Castillo Aguilar is the fifth member of the organisation CODEDI to be killed in 2018.
On 25 September, woman human rights defender Su’ad Al-Ali was shot dead in the city of Basra in southern Iraq. This is the latest case in a series of attacks on civil society actors in Iraq.
On 28 July 2018, the body of indigenous leader and woman human rights defender Juana Raymundo was found on the road near Nebaj and Acambalam Village, Guatemala. According to the Farmers’ Development Committee (Comité de Desarrollo Campesino – CODECA), her body showed signs of torture.
On 14 June 2018, Kashmir journalist and human rights defender Shujaat Bukhari was killed after being shot multiple times as he was leaving his office in Srinagar, Kashmir. His two security guards were also killed in the attack.
On 1 June during ongoing protests by Palestinians in Gaza near the fence sealing off the enclave, Israeli snipers fired at Palestinian volunteer medic Razan Al-Najjar as she was aiding another injured protester, according to eyewitnesses. She was hit in the upper body and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
At approximately 9:00 am on 9 May 2018, human rights defender Luis Arturo Marroquín was killed when leaving a local bookshop in San Luís Jilotepéque. Two hooded men had followed him from Jalapa to San Luís Jilotepéque. From a black Toyota Hilux truck, the perpetrators shot the defender in the back several times
On 2 May 2018, human rights defender Hugo Albeiro George Pérez was shot and killed by an unknown individual, while he was participating in a peaceful protest to oppose the impact of Hidroituango Hydroelectric Project in Colombia’s Antioquia Department. The human rights defender’s nephew, Domar Egidio Zapata George, was also killed in the attack.
On 19 April 2018, Olivia Arévalo Lomas, a woman human rights defender and spiritual leader of the Shipibo-Konibo indigenous peoples, was killed by unknown assailants just a few feet from her home in the community of 'Victoria Gracia', in Coronel Portillo Province, Ucayalí, Peru. The defender was shot in the chest and died instantly. Her body was left on the street in full view of her local community.
