Dispatches 2019 presents the work Front Line Defenders has undertaken around the world for the protection and security of human rights defenders at risk in 2019, including the impact of grants, training, advocacy, visibility, rest & respite and other programs. In 2019, Front Line Defenders hosted 114 HRDs at the biennial Dublin Platform; presented its annual Awards to 5 LGBTI+ rights defenders in honor of the 50th annivesary of the Stonewall Uprising; and provided 626 protection grants to HRDs around the world.

On 28 March 2016, two members of the Our Rights Group, a Sudanese civil society coalition, were prevented from traveling from Sudan to Geneva, where they were due to participate in meetings related to the UN's review of Sudan's human rights record, a process that is explicitly supposed to include contributions from independent civil society. Sudan's examination under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is scheduled for May 2016.

Le 18 juillet 2016, le défenseur des droits humains Khalafalla Alafif Mukhtar comparaitra devant la cour d'assise centrale de Khartoum. Il est accusé de sept infractions pénales, notamment d'avoir "engagé une guerre contre l'État". Khalafalla Alafif Mukhtar est détenu au parquet de Khartoum depuis le 22 mai 2016, avec ses collègues Mustafa Adam et Midhat A Hamdan.

Azimjan Askarov is a Kyrgyz HRD working against corruption and for civil and political rights in the country, including for the ethnic minority Uzbek population.  He was arrested during the violent clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan in 2010 between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz, though he had long been targeted by the authorities because of his human rights work.  Read more about his persecution on his case history page.  Masha Chichtchenkova is Front Line Defenders Protection Coo

Andrew Anderson Visiting Azimjan Askarov in Prison in Kyrgyzstan

When I visited Azimjan Askarov in prison in Bishkek in December 2010 there were some grounds for hope that he would be released. He had been sentenced in September 2010 to life in prison, but the process had been seriously flawed and the Kyrgyz human rights Ombudsman had found that the charges against him were politically motivated. When we met with Azimjan our main concern was that his health was improving following the torture he had been subjected to.
