On 15 July 2009, Natalia was abducted from her home in Grozny. A few hours later her body was found in neighbouring Ingushetia. Previous threats made against both Natalia and the organisation she worked for, Memorial, combined with the circumstances of her murder, point to possible government or official involvement in her killing. HRDs and investigative journalists in Chechnya often face many forms of threats and intimidation.
On 5 January 2015, the body of human rights defender Mr Juan Francisco Martínez was found in the village of Tapuyman in the Santa Elena Municipality of La Paz. The human rights defender, whose body bore marks of torture, had been killed on 4 January 2015.
On 28 February 2011, the body of human rights defender Mr Sebastião Bezerra da Silva was discovered buried on a farm in the municipality of Dueré, Tocantins State.
On 29 August 2015, human rights defender and indigenous leader Semião Fernandes Vilhalva was killed in a land recuperation operation after the Guarani-Kaiowás occupied their ancestral lands in the municipality of Antônio João in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
On 25 August 2015, unidentified individuals attacked and killed human rights defender Mr Raimundo dos Santos Rodrigues, a prominent environmental rights defender in Brazil.
The individuals attacked Raimundo dos Santos Rodrigues while returning to his home in Bom Jardim, in the state of Maranhão. Raimundo dos Santos Rodrigues was shot and also attacked with a machete and died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
On 19 September 2013, Mr Vitalmiro Bastos de Moura, also known as Bida, was sentenced to 30 years in jail for ordering the 2005 murder, of nun and defender of the Amazon, Sr. Dorothy Stang.
