On 28 April 2012 journalist and human rights defender Ms Regina Martínez Pérez was found dead in her home in the city of Xalapa, in Veracruz.
On 16 December 2010 an unknown assassin killed Marisela outside the governor's office, in the northern city of Chihuahua, where the human rights defender was holding a vigil for her daughter.
On 30 January 2016, three days after after being shot, human rights defender Ms Teresita Navacilla died in a hospital in Tagum City, in the Southern Mindanao region of the Philippines. Her assailants have not been identified yet.
In September 2013 Cao Shunli was detained as she attempted to leave the country to attend a training session in Geneva on UN human rights mechanisms. Following prolonged denial of adequate medical attention by the Chinese authorities and despite repeated appeals for her release on medical parole due to her rapidly deteriorating health, Cao Shunli died in hospital in Beijing on 14 March 2014.
