No one can deny the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those Eritreans who fought for the independence of their country, yet sadly this very fact prompts the question as to what exactly there is to celebrate 25 years on.

On 23 April, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan fully acquitted Rasul Jafarov, prominent human rights defender and founder of the Human Rights Club. 

On 17 March 2016, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, issued a presidential pardon for 148 prisoners, among them human rights defender Rasul Jafarov.

On 2 July 2013 the Federal Supreme Court of Abu Dhabi sentenced 56 people, including leading human rights lawyer Dr Mohamed Al-Roken to 10 years in prison. Dr Al-Roken was detained in July 2012 and stood trial as part of the group that became known as the “UAE 94”. Prominent defender Mr Mohamed Al-Mansoori received the same sentence. Due for release on 17 July 2022, this date has now passed and he remains incarcerated, with no comment from the authorities.
