Leila Hossein Zadeh

WHRD, Student Activist

Leila Hossein Zadeh is a woman human rights defender and student activist, who has been advocating for women's rights and the rights of disadvantaged people to employment and freedom of speech, association and assembly. She has been prosecuted many times in Iran, and has been sentenced and imprisoned for her human rights work. She is currently imprisoned in Shiraz prison, despite doctors certified by the Iranian Organization of Prisons having attested that her detention can exacerbate her auto-immune condition and put her life at great risk.

Human rights defenders and journalists are arrested, detained and prosecuted in unfair trials. HRDs continue to receive death threats and are subjected to harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention. They are refused bail or receive extreme bail conditions. HRDs are additionally subjected to systematic surveillance and their family members are targeted. Journalists have been subjected to flogging for criticising the government.
