Su’ad Al-Ali

HRD & President
AlWeed AlAlaiami for Human Rights

Su’ad Al-Ali is the president of AlWeed AlAlaiami for Human Rights, an Iraqi NGO that works on women’s and children’s rights. She is among the leaders of ongoing social protests against corruption, poor infrastructure, contaminated water and the rise of unemployment that began in July of 2018, organised in the city of Basra. She is vocal against corruption and advocates for the social and economic rights of Iraqi people. The human rights defender has condemned violence used by Iraqi authorities and their supporters against protesters and activists.

Human rights defenders in Iraq have been subjected to attack, harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention without trial. Despite the fact that Iraq became a party to the Convention Against Torture in July 2011, torture and ill-treatment in camps and detention centres remains widespread, including against imprisoned human rights defenders and democracy activists.
