Kamala Hemchuri is president of the Professional Development Resource Center (PDRC). Established in 2005, PDRC provides better education opportunities for young members of the Dalit community.

The situation for human rights defenders has improved since the restoration of Parliament in April 2006 and the Peace Agreement signed in November 2006. However, human rights defenders and journalists have continued to face threats, harassment, and the violent dispersement of peaceful protests by police and security forces. Nepal’s decade-long civil war between 1996 and 2006, in which at least 13,000 people died.
