Safaa Al-Saray

HRD

Safaa Al-Saray was a social media blogger who focused on promoting civil and political rights in Iraq, and who had participated in anti-corruption demonstrations in 2011, 2013 and 2015. In October 2019, Safaa Al-Saray was struck on his head by a tear gas cannister shot at him as he participated in demonstrations in Baghdad. He died from his injuries shortly afterwards.

Iraq

Human rights defenders in Iraq have been subjected to attack, harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention without trial. Despite the fact that Iraq became a party to the Convention Against Torture in July 2011, torture and ill-treatment in camps and detention centres remains widespread, including against imprisoned human rights defenders and democracy activists.
