Román Alejandro Ochoa Rosado


Román Alejandro Ochoa Rosado is a human rights defender. Since 2012 he has worked with the organisation El Caracol, which defends land and territory rights and the rights of the people of the Mayan communities in the centre and north of the state of Campeche. Román accompanies the Ejido authorities of the  Union of Ejidos in Defence of Mayan Territory (Unión de Ejidos en Defensa del Territorio Maya) in processes of agrarian, criminal and public complaints, which is why he has faced risks since February 2021.


Human rights defenders (HRDs) and journalists in Mexico are subject to intimidation, legal harassment, arbitrary detention, death threats, acts of physical aggression, enforced disappearances and killings as a result of their activities in defence of human rights and the exercise of freedom of expression and journalism.
