Pedro Alonso Benítez

HRD, journalist, founder of Proyectocinco

Pedro Alonso Benítez is a journalist and human rights defender from Puebla, Mexico. He is the founder of Proyectocinco, a newscast for the Metropolitan Area of Puebla and Tlaxcala, from San Martín Texmelucan and has been a correspondent for El Sol de Puebla. As part of his coverage, he addresses environmental issues, the defense of water, land and territory, as well as issues related to corruption in municipal administration and violence at the local level. He has a degree in Journalism and has specialised in investigative journalism, receiving training at institutions such as the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), the Cátedra Granados Chapa and El Colegio de México (COLMEX) and at organisations such as the Instituto para la Seguridad y Democracia, A.C. - INSYDE, the National Center for Social Communication (CENCOS) and the International Republican Institute (IRI). He currently teaches at the Mexican Institute of Journalism in Puebla (IMEP).

Human rights defenders (HRDs) and journalists in Mexico are subject to intimidation, legal harassment, arbitrary detention, death threats, acts of physical aggression, enforced disappearances and killings as a result of their activities in defence of human rights and the exercise of freedom of expression and journalism.
