Lourdes Haquelina Gómez Willis

Lourdes Haquelina Gómez is an indigenous and Afro-descendent woman human rights defender and teacher from Cobán Alta Verapaz. She has worked for over 10 years in favor of popular education for indigenous communities, the rights of victims of internal armed conflict and the economic, social, cultural and environmental rights of the communities of Alta Verapaz. Lourdes advocacy started because of her own mother being a WHRD that helped indigenous women in the north of Guatemala.

A climate of impunity in regard to human rights violations still prevails in the country, few attacks against HRDs are investigated and even fewer result in convictions.
