Carlota Isabel Salinas Pérez
Carlota Isabel Salinas Pérez was a recognized social leader within the Magdalena Medio Region of Colombia. She was a member of Organizacion Femenina Popular (OFP) and a member of the Civil Defense Corps of San Pablo municipality, where she worked for several years in disaster risk management, social action and environmental management. Carlota dedicated her life to defending women's rights by promoting forms of collective resistance against patriarchy and capitalism.
The defender was assassinated on March 24, 2020, by a group of armed men who shot her in front of her house in the Guarigua neighborhood, in the municipality of San Pablo. Hours before the attack, Carlota was collecting funds to help the most vulnerable in her neighborhood affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
HRDs in Colombia work in a violent and unsafe environment. They are subjected to threats, intimidation, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, physical assaults, torture, killings, illegal searches of their homes and offices and stigmatisation as a result of their activities in defence of human rights.
