Thant Zin

HRD

Thant Zin is a Burmese activist, who protested in front of the Chinese embassy in Yangon calling on the Myanmar authorities to carry out an urgent and impartial investigation into the death of Daw Khin Win. She was shot dead on 22 December 2014 while demonstrating against illegal land confiscations and forced evictions over the Letpadaung copper mine in Monywa.

Myanmar

The National Human Rights Commission established in 2011, but is largely criticized for being ineffective and refusing to investigate violations in ethnic minority areas. Burma's new law on freedom of assembly, falls short of international human rights standards, requiring protestors to seek permission to demonstrate five days in advance and submit their slogans for state approval.
