Soneshwar Narah is a human rights defender and convenor of Jeepal Krishak Shramik Sangha, (JKSS), a farmers' rights organization advocating for rights of peasant and indigenous communities in Assam. Soneshwar works towards social justice and to hold government authorities, including police and local government, accountable for violations and deprivations against the local indigenous community. In the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproprtionately affected poor and marginalized communities, the HRD has undertaken critical human rights work to ensure local peasant and indigenous peoples have access to the basic essentials necessary to preserve life.

Human rights defenders in India face a diverse range of attacks and harassment from state and non-state actors alike, including killing, physical assault, arbitrary detention, threats and judicial harassment.
