Marielle Vive Camp
Luis Ferreira da Costa was a mason and human rights defender. He helped establish the Marielle Vive Camp in 2018. Since then, he had been working in the daily maintenance of the camp and participating in trainings organised by the movement, such as an adult literacy group. Luis Ferreira da Costa defined himself as "a warrior" in favor of dignified housing. At the age of 72, he was killed during a protest for access to water by the Camp, leaving behind ten children.
The challenges and threats faced by human rights defenders in Brazil remain very high, particularly for those working on issues of land, environment, indigenous peoples, LGBTi rights, corruption and impunity.
