Le Luan

HRD, Lawyer
Violations:

Le Luan is a Hanoi-based human rights lawyer providing free legal support to the victims of police brutality and other human rights abuses by the authorities. Along with fellow lawyer, Tran Thu Nam, he supports the family of Do Dang Du, who died on 10 October 2015, after being held in police custody for two months on a charge of theft. The lawyers questioned the validity of the autopsy carried out on Do Dang Du’s body as it failed to include an examination of internal organs, which could prove that he died as a result of injuries sustained in the beating.

Vietnam

Vietnamese authorities treat human rights defenders as “enemies of the State”. In Vietnam, there is no independent, privately-run media – domestic newspapers, television and radio stations are strictly controlled by the state. Internet communication is also strictly controlled and restricted. HRDs working for accountability and democracy receive accusations of being “foreign spies or agents”, “traitors”, or “violators of public order and peace”.
