Travel ban against Aida Seif El-Dawla

About the situation

On the morning of 23 November 2016, Egyptian authorities banned prominent human rights defender Aida Seif from travelling to Tunisia. Aida Seif was travelling from Cairo International Airport when she was informed of a travel ban against her as a result of her involvement in an ongoing case. Aida was further informed that she must go to the office of the Attorney General in Egypt for review. Aida is the founder of El Nadeem Center which has itself been the target of judicial harassment lately.

About Aida Seif

Aida Seif El-DawlaAida is a leading defender of women’s rights, combating female genital mutilation and violence against women. As a psychiatrist, she and some of her colleagues started to document abuses and torture committed by Egyptian police. In 1993, they established the El Nadeem Center for the Psychological Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence. The center provides psychological, medical and legal support to torture victims and their families, but also to women subject to any kind of violence.
