George Kounanis Testimony
My fight is to ensure that children, teenagers and adults alike will no longer feel insecure for being and expressing who they really are, and to create a safe haven so that no one will ever feel threatened by another human being.
George is a young LGBT HRD, active in a number of groups/initiatives. Last year he was attacked by police, verbally and physically, for holding hands with his partner. He brought a case against the police before the courts as well as a separate case against Greece at the ECtHR for discrimination against LGBT people, which remains pending. Because of the publicity around the attack (which he had the courage to denounce publicly) and his role in the two court cases, he has received intimidation and threats by right-wing groups (which is very much on the rise in Greece). Also, since he has identified the police officers in his complaints, he is expecting a counter-complaint against him by those officers accusing him of assault and resistance to public officer.
