Sipho Gumedze is a prominent civil society activist and lawyer with Lawyers for Human Rights (Swaziland), who has been directly defamed by the the King of Swaziland for his advocacy for human rights and for questioning the absolute monarchy.

Human-rights problems in Swaziland include extrajudicial killings by security forces; mob killings; police use of torture, beatings, and excessive force on detainees; police impunity; arbitrary arrests and lengthy pretrial detention; restrictions on freedoms of speech and press and harassment of journalists; restrictions on freedoms of assembly, association, and movement; prohibitions on political activity and harassment of political activists, and many others.
