On 4 March 2020, woman human rights defender Rita Nyampinga was recognised as one of 12 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award winners for 2020 by the United States of America government ahead of International Women’s Day
Rita Nyampinga promotes the rights of female prisoners through her work with the Female Prisoners Support Trust.
Despite numerous challenges, Zimbabwe has an active civil society advocating for a broad range of human rights issues, yet increasing numbers of human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists are being targeted due to their legitimate human rights work.
