Manuela Picq
Manuela Picq is a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, at Princeton University in the United States, a former faculty member of the Universidad de San Francisco Quito and a journalist. She is a correspondent for Al Jazeera and for the digital magazine Upsidedownworld. As both a journalist and an academic, Manuela Picq has raised awareness on issues relating to social movements, feminism, gender and sexual diversity and indigenous studies.
Human rights defenders have been victims of a wide range of violations in Ecuador, such as police brutality, judicial harassment, arbitrary detentions, smear campaigns, threats, harassment and the oppression of indigenous and campesino communities. Recent incidents have shown that the situation for human rights defenders in Ecuador is precarious.
