The shocking murder of trans activist Hande Kader says much about Turkey today

She would go crazy when trans individuals were killed. She'd be so sad... She had been stabbed and beaten before. This didn't happen only to Hande. It happens to all of them.

- Davut Dengiler, Hande's friend

Hande Kader was a 23-year-old transgender woman and well-known LGBT activist. She was familiar to millions of Turks due to the fact that when 2015 Istanbul Pride parade was suppressed with rubber bullets, water cannons and pepper spray, she was at the forefront of the resistance against police force, making her a figurehead for LGBT rights in Turkey.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) activists face numerous obstacles due to societal homophia and hostility from the authorities and law enforcement officials, as well as violence in the community. LGBTI rights defenders are harassed by the police, which proceed to discriminatory identity checks.
