Lawyer for Yaqui Tribe Fighting Mexico’s DAPL Kidnapped

Anabela Carlon Flores is a lawyer for the Yaqui tribe in Mexico. Her village, Loma de Bácum, is standing against a pipeline that the transnational company IEnova is attempting to build through their territory without the community’s consent. Despite a legal document issued by the local authority that mandates that the company stop any building activity within Loma de Bácum, construction continues. Anabela has been threatened for her opposition, and in December 2016 was kidnapped with her husband.

Disappearances are endemic in Mexico, often happening with collusion from the state. HRDs working on the issue face serious risk, up to and including death. HRDs working in the defence of territory, particularly indigenous territory, face a similar level of risk.
