Many human rights defenders every year report being victims of assaults, carried out by uniformed police, plain-clothes agents, private security agents, hired thugs or others. In virtually all cases, attackers remain unpunished. Attacks also frequently occur in the context of demonstrations, when police disperse protesters.
Though shattered, traumatised and in pain, fear and panic, I am encouraged by one thing. My assailants left me alive, and now I have an opportunity to recount my experience, though keeping the names and places secret for my security.
