Dayanara Castillo
Dayanara Castillo is a student activist at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras - UNAH (National Autonomous University of Honduras), where she is an active member of the Movimiento Amplio Universitario (Ample University Movement, MAU) and the Mesa Amplia de Estudiantes Indignados (Broad Table of Outraged Students), which campaign for free and quality superior education. She has also been actively involved in advocating for the rights of sexual minorities as a member of the LGBT rights organisation Asociación Kukulcan.
Human rights defenders (HRDs) in Guatemala are subjected to death threats, physical attacks, acts of harassment, surveillance, stigmatisation, judicial harassment, arbitrary detention, forced disappearance and killings. Many of the violations are carried out by clandestine security structures and illegal groups. The exceptionally high level of impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators increases the risk exponentially for HRDs.
