Case History: Mohammed Fahmy
On 31 January 2013, human rights defender Mr Mohammed Fahmy was released by the investigation judge after paying a bail of 5,000 Egyptian Pounds. He had been in detention since 26 January 2013.
Mohammed Fahmy is an active member of No Military Trials for Civilians, a movement which highlights and campaigns against the use of military trials and detention against civilians by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF). He is also founder of Manhooba Movement, which focuses on exposing corruption within the Government and the military. Mohammed Fahmy's work also involves defending prisoners' rights by providing legal assistance and media coverage.

Human rights defender Mr Mohammed Fahmy was arrested during a public demonstration in Opera Square in Cairo, which marked the second anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution. He was subsequently taken to Abdeen Prosecution Office in Cairo, where he is currently being held for interrogation. While Front Line Defenders welcomes the release of Mohammed Fahmy, we reiterate our call on the authorities of Egypt to cease the ongoing campaign of judicial harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders, and to ensure that they are free to carry out their legitimate and peaceful human rights activities without fear of reprisals.

The human rights defender is due to appear before Abdeen Prosecution office on 29 January 2013 on charges of illegal possession of weaponry, which the he vehemently denies.
Mohammed Fahmy was previously detained for two days on 15 April 2012 in relation with his human rights activities, and was subsequently released without charges.
