Pouran Nazemi

WHRD

Pouran Nazemi is a woman human rights defender who has actively campaigned for civil rights since 2005 in the south of Kerman Province, Iran. She works with women, children, political prisoners, families seeking justice, and marginalised religious groups.

Additionally, she has been working with the disadvantaged agricultural Jazmourian community (living in an inland province in southeast Iran, impacted by climate change) on capacity development of women, sanitation of wells, and environmental awareness. As a consequence of her work, her land was seized by the authorities and in October 2023, Jiroft Revolutionary Court charged her with “insulting the sacred principles of Islam”, “War against God” and “Corruption on Earth”, offences punishable by death penalty under the Islamic Penal Code.

Human rights defenders and journalists in Iran are arrested, detained and prosecuted in unfair trials. HRDs continue to receive death threats and are subjected to harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention. They are refused bail or receive extreme bail conditions. HRDs are additionally subjected to systematic surveillance and their family members are targeted. Journalists have been subjected to flogging for criticising the government.
