Guatemala: Break-in and robbery at the offices of human rights organisation Fundación Guillermo Toriello (FGT)posted on: 2011/07/01

On the night of the 26-27 June 2011 human rights organisation Fundación Guillermo Toriello – FGT (Guillermo Toriello Foundation) was broken into and valuable equipment, containing sensitive and important information, was stolen. The FGT promotes the rights of poor rural communities in Guatemala, and works to improve the livelihoods of those communities through supporting their claims to access land and offering technical advice, agricultural support and humanitarian relief where necessary. At the national level the FGT lobbies the Guatemalan government to introduce laws and policies that benefit poor rural communities in Guatemala.

Colombia: Break-in at home of human rights defender Mr Danilo Rueda and theft of items containing sensitive informationposted on: 2011/05/20

On 13 May 2011 the home of human rights defender Mr Danilo Rueda in Bogotá was broken into and computer memory sticks containing confidential and sensitive information regarding human rights abuses and his work in the protection of human rights were stolen. Danilo Rueda is the National Coordinator of the NGO Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz – CIJP (Inter-Church Commission of Justice and Peace), a church-based human rights organisation working to expose human rights violations committed in the conflict regions of Colombia by state security forces and paramilitary groups. Members of the group including Danilo Rueda have been subjected to death threats and other acts of intimidation in the past as a result of their work in the defence of human rights.

Brazil: Break-in at the office of human rights organisation Dignitatisposted on: 2011/02/03

On the night of 30-31 January 2011, the offices of human rights organisation Dignitatis – Assessoria Técnica Popular in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba State, were broken into and various important articles stolen.

Dignitatis is an organisation which aims to empower social movements through the provision of technical advice and training on human rights and citizenship, particularly in the States of Paraíba and Pernambuco.

On 31 January 2011, at approximately 9am, members of Dignitatis arrived at their headquarters in João Pessoa to discover that the window of the office had been broken and that the office had been entered via a balcony. Several items had been stolen from the offices including a computer, a printer, and a digital camera containing images and videos of interviews, events, and courses carried out by the organisation.

It is suspected that the robbery took place between the afternoon of 30 January 2011 and the morning of 31 January 2011, as members of another organisation, which is located in the same building as Dignitatis' office, were present until midday of 30 January 2011.

Mexico: Break-in at the offices of the Centre for Womens Rightsposted on: 2010/04/09

The offices of the Centro de Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres A.C.- CEDEHM (the Centre for Women's Rights) were broken into on 6 April 2010. CEDEHM is a non-governmental organisation, based in the city of Chihuahua, which promotes and protects the rights of women and offers legal and psychological support to women victims of violence.

Guatemala: Break-in at the home of human rights defender Ms Erenia Vanegas and threats against Ms Claudia Samayoa and members of SEDEMposted on: 2010/03/10

The home of human rights defender Ms Erenia Vanegas was broken into on 5 March 2010 and the car of Ms Claudia Samayoa was tampered with in an attempt to cause an accident on 2 February 2010.

Serbia: Break-in at the home of State Secretary for human rights, Mr Marko Karadzicposted on: 2010/01/25

On 8 January 2010, the apartment of human rights defender Mr Marko Karadzic was broken into. Marko Karadzic is the State Secretary at the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights.

Destruction of Kazan Center for Human Rights' Office, May 2004posted on: 2004/08/10

Front Line is alarmed by reports it has received from the Kazan Center for Human Rights. On the 27th of May 2004 the Center was broken into and badly vandalized. Reportedly, two men concealing their identity with masks broke into the offices and destroyed computers and other office equipment. One staff member of the Center was present during the attack.

The Kazan Human Rights Center (in the autonomous republic of Tatarstan, Russia), is a human rights organization providing legal support for victims of human rights violations from the side of law enforcement bodies. From April 2003 to May 2004 human rights activists received more than 140 complaints on illegal activity of Tatarstan law enforcement bodies. All of them were checked. As a result the Center’s lawyers managed to initiate 11 official investigations on tortures and corruption against 11 militia officers. The court found four militiamen guilty; six others are waiting for trials.

Intimidation of members of Centre for Human Rights Legal Action (CALDH) in Guatemalaposted on: 2004/07/20

Front Line is seriously concerned for the safety of members of the Centre for Human Rights Legal Action (CALDH), a non-governmental organisation which campaigns for truth and justice on behalf of victims of genocide in Guatemala.

In April 2004 it brought the case of the massacre on 18 July 1982 of 268 inhabitants of the community of Plan de Sanchez by the Guatemalan armed forces before the Inter American Court on Human Rights, which subsequently condemned the Guatemalan Government for the massacre. CALDH is also a member of the coalition promoting the creation of the Commission for the Investigation of Illegal bodies and Clandestine Security Operations (CICIACS). Christina Laur, a member of CALDH, attended the Front Line Second Dublin Platform for Human Rights Defenders in September 2003.

According to reports received by Front Line, on 14 and 15 July 2004 the home of the director of CALDH, Edda Gaviola, was broken into. Nothing was stolen but intimidating messages were left and her personal documents had been searched.
