Torturas y malos tratos a defensor de los derechos humanos en Uzbekistán

Front Line está muy preocupado por los informes recibidos sobre Ihtiyor Hamroev, defensor de los derechos humanos y miembro de la Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan [Asociación para los Derechos Humanos en Uzbekistán]. Hamoev fue sujeto de torturas y malos tratos durante su detención en la Prisión 64/78 en la región de Djizak, el 26 y 27 de diciembre del 2006.

El 26 de diciembre del 2006, Ihtiyor Hamroev se quejó reiteradamente de dolores en el estómago debido a una úlcera, y le solicitó al guardia de la prisión que llamara al médico. Las autoridades de la prisión fueron informadas de su situación. Se dice que, al día siguiente, 27 de diciembre del 2006, Ihtiyor Hamroev fue esposado y salvajemente golpeado por los guardias de la prisión. Los informes afirman que recibió patadas repetidamente en el estómago, y que fue arrastrado de los pelos por el suelo. Luego se lo trasladó a una celda donde estuvo aislado durante 24 horas. La salud de Hamroev se deterioró considerablemente luego del incidente, y fue transferido al hospital del distrito de Zafarabad, donde fue examinado por los médicos.  Read More

Uzbek Human Rights Defender Released

Front Line welcomes reports that Yadgar Turlibekov, a prominent human rights defender from Uzbekistan, jailed for ‘extortion’ has been released following a Parliamentary decision announced, on 24 December.

Turlibekov, journalist and leader of the Kashkadarya regional branch of the Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan has been monitoring and documenting human rights violations committed against farmers and independent Muslims for many years.On 16 June 2006, in the city of Karshi, about 30 police officers broke into his home and seized his computer and human rights literature. He was arrested later that day. On 9 October, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.  Read More

Opening of Front Line's EU Office in Brussels

Brussels, 29 November 2006 – Irish EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy has cut the ribbon to formally open the EU Office of Front Line, on 29 November, the first-ever International Women Human Rights Defenders Day. “I'm pleased to open the Front Line's office in Brussels, since this Irish-based international organisation has demonstrated the vital role human rights defenders can play, and the need to work for their protection”, stated the EU Commissioner.

Founded in Dublin in 2001, Front Line provides support and security for human rights defenders. This support is provided through a grant programme, training, advocacy, research, a fellowship programme. Front Line regularly publishes reports on the situation of human rights defenders.

Front Line has established an office in Brussels to more effectively follow-up on the EU Guidelines for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders adopted under the Irish Presidency in June 2004 and to more effectively lobby the Commission and other EU institutions on behalf of human rights defenders.

Stories from the Front Line

To mark the 8th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, Front Line, the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in association with FOUR will host ‘Stories from the Frontline” at 3.00 pm, Saturday 9, December.

Kasinather Sivapalan, a prominent lawyer and human rights defender from Sri Lanka and Abdujalil Boymatov, a leading human rights defender and nuclear physicist from Uzbekistan will give their personal testimonies of working at risk in hostile environments.

Sivapalan is the former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and Coordinator of Legal Aid Center; he is a lecturer in Law at the Eastern University in Sri Lanka and member of the Ceasefire Monitoring Commission.

Abdujalil is the vice – president of the Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan an organization with over 600 members. For over 15 years he has reported and documented the human rights violations committed by the Uzbek government.  Read More
