Krishna Upadhyaya is a British citizen who has investigated the conditions of Nepalese migrant labourers who are constructing facilities for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He is an employees of the Global Network for Rights and Development (GNRD). In September 2014, he was detained for nine days, for "having violated the provisions of the laws of the state of Qatar".

Human rights defenders working in Qatar face many obstacles and difficulties in the form of government harassment, travel restrictions and arbitrary detention. Although Qatar is the home of the media giant al-Jazeera, which is praised for its critical reporting of Middle East affairs, there are restrictions on freedom of expression.
