- For defenders
- How can I help?
The Flora Women's Mini Marathon is the biggest all women's event of its kind in the world, and it is the biggest charity event in Ireland each year. Front Line Defenders is inviting walkers, joggers and runners alike to join its team for this 10 kilometre race, and raise awareness and much needed funds for women human rights defenders at risk around the world. This year's race took place on 3 June 2013, and we are very proud of our team of runners that took part !
100% of donations raised by Team FLD will be dedicated specifically to the Protection Fund for Human Rights Defenders at Risk which provides direct support to women human rights defenders.
Women human rights defenders are powerful agents of change within their societies, and work on the promotion and protection of many different human rights issues. However, as a result of being women and the nature of their work, many women defenders face additional threats to their personal well-being, specifically in the form of gender-based violence and attacks. In the face of strong patriarchal social structures, women may not be viewed as having a place in the professional or public sphere of a society, and therefore women defenders have to overcome these challenges in addition to the challenges of being a defender in order to achieve success in their work. Despite these insurmountable odds, women human rights defenders have proven to be instrumental in the fight for change and for peace in their communities.
