On 9 January 2017, the High Court of Bangladesh rejected a petition filed by human rights defenders Mr Adilur Rahman Khan and Mr A.S.M Nasiruddin Elan to quash a charge made against them in September 2013. They were charged with “publishing false images and information” and “disrupting the law and order situation of the country”.

Update: on 7 August 2019, human rights defender Guo Feixiong was released, at the end of his six-year prison sentence.

Guo, the 2015 winner of the Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk, served a six year prison sentence for “gathering crowds to disturb social order” and “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”.

On July 25 2020, human rights defender Azimjan Askarov died in Kyrgyzstan at penal colony №47 where he had been transferred a day before for medical examination.

On 22 July 2020, Azimjan Askarov’s lawyer Valeryan Vakhitov visited the human rights defender in prison and reported that his health had deteriorated significantly.

On the 7th anniversary of the peaceful popular movement of the Bahraini people which started on 14 February 2011, the NGOs called on the international community to help free human rights defenders in Bahrain, some of whom are jailed for life, and to stop the persecution of journalists simply for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. On 05 February 2018, Abdulhadi's wife Khadija Al-Mousawi tweeted that she visited her husband  who has been targeted and abused in Jaw prison and has been taken to hospital in shackles.

On 4 September 2020, human rights defender Abdel Fattah Bouchikhi was released from prison after completing his four month sentence.

On 28 May 2020, the Court of First Instance of Jorf El Melha sentenced human rights defender Abdel Fattah Bouchikhi to four months' imprisonment. He is charged with defamation regarding a social media post he made in the context of COVID-19.

8 Noviembre 2019

On 26 July 2019, the General Assembly of the Constitutional Court examined the individual applications of ten Academics for Peace, including Füsun Üstel, who have been sentenced to prison on charges of "propagandising for a terrorist organisation" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime". The Court ruled that the conviction of Academics for Peace violates their freedom of expression.

On 21 September 2019, human rights defender Raif Badawi ended his hunger strike after receiving a visit from the Saudi Human Rights Commission.

On 17 September 2019, human rights defender Raif Badawi began an open-ended hunger strike over the intensifying mistreatment and worsening detention conditions he is facing.  Most recently, prison officials confiscated his books and important medicine.

On 29 May 2020, the Nanning procuratorate prosecuted human rights lawyer Qin Yongpei for "inciting subversion of State power" and sent its decision to the Nanning Intermediate People's Court.

Between 14-16 April 2020, police and local district officials in Guangxi province visited and harassed Deng Xiaoyun, Qin Yongpei's wife, and several other family members, warning her and telling others to warn her to stop her social media posting on Twitter.

On 2 July 2020, Atena Daemi was sentenced by Branch 24 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court to two additional years in prison and 74 lashes. The woman human rights defender’s lawyer attended the hearing for the charges of “propaganda against the state”, for which she was sentenced to one year, and another year and 74 lashes for “disrupting the prison order”.

On 30 August 2020, woman human rights defender Ms. Mahienour El-Masry was interrogated at the Public Prosecution Office, accused of a second count of "joining an illegal organisation" as part of the recently opened case No. 855 of 2020.

On 5 May 2020, the Criminal Court of Cairo renewed the detention of woman human rights defender Mahienour El-Masry and human rights defenders Mohamed El-Baqer, Ibrahim Ezz El-Din, and Mohamed Ibrahim for an additional 45 days.

On 31 March 2017 Chinese courts handed down verdicts in the cases of three human rights defenders. - Su Changlan (苏昌兰) and Chen Qitang (陈启棠) were found guilty of inciting subversion of state power, and Chen Yunfei (陈云费) was convicted of picking quarrels and causing trouble. The three human rights defenders have all been illegally detained for at least two years, and all were given prison sentences of three years or longer.

In the last week of October 2020, the two defence lawyers representing Yu Wensheng submitted four requests to the Jiangsu Provincial Higher People's Court, appealing his first-instance guilty verdict.

On 18 September 2020, a court official from the Jiangsu Higher People's Court informed the family of human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng that his application for bail has been rejected.

On 14 August 2020, human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng, sentenced in June 2020, was permitted to meet a lawyer of his choice for the first time at a detention centre in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province.

On 10 November 2020, the State Public Prosecutor accused human rights defender Mohamed Ibrahim of being involved in case No. 885, and charged him with 'joining a terrorist group' for the second time.

On 27 October 2020, the Public Prosecution renewed the detention of human rights defender Mohamed Ibrahim for an additional 45 days.

On 24 August 2020, the family of human rights defender Mohamed Ibrahim was informed that Mr. Ibrahim had been transferred from Tora prison to Al-Aqrab prison; a maximum security detention centre, notorious for its inhumane conditions.

On 20 January 2017, Israeli occupation forces arrested human rights defenders Ms Lema Nazeeh and Mr Mohammed Khatib – along with four other peaceful protesters -  near the illegal Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Israeli forces then went on to ill-treat Lema Nazeeh throughout her four days in detention at Al-Maskubiyyah prison in Jerusalem. On 23 January 2017, Israeli occupation forces also arrested human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma as he attended the court hearing of the two aforementioned defenders.

Health rights defenders Cheng Yuan, Liu Dazhi, and Wu Gejianxiong were tried in the first week of September 2020 at the Changsha Intermediate People’s Court. Their families were not informed about the trial until after it had taken place.

On 10 July 2020, Shi Minglei, health rights defender Cheng Yuan's wife, contacted the Changsha Municipal Procuratorate and was informed that her husband and two fellow defenders, Liu Dazhi and Wu Gejianxiong, were indicted on 24 June 2020.

On 28 January 2020 the Criminal Court of Kuwait dropped some of the charges against human rights defender Abdullah Al-Fadhli and decided to refrain from pronouncing punishment in relation to the remaining charges. Following the payment of a fine he was released from prison.

On 27 February 2020, the Criminal Court of Cairo rejected the appeal of human rights defender Ramy Kamel and renewed his detention for an additional 15 days. The human rights defender has been detained since 23 November 2019.

On 2 December 2019, the Supreme Public Prosecution in Cairo ordered the preventive detention of human rights defender Ramy Kamel. He is facing charges of “funding a terrorist organisation”, “defamation” and “misuse of social media”.

On 9 November 2019, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards arrested Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee.

On 5 September 2019, the Tehran Appeal Court extended the sentence of human rights defenders Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee during a revision hearing for two additional years and one month. On 18 July 2019, the Revolutionary Court in Tehran found both human rights defenders guilty of " insulting the supreme leader" and "promoting propaganda against the state". They received prison sentences of three years and seven months.

On 17 January 2017, the Appeals Court in Al-Ayoun decided to reduce the sentence of Ali Al-Sadouni, Nour-al-Din Arkoubi and Khalihon Al-Faak from two years to one and a half years. On 5 January, the three Sahrawi HRDs began a hunger strike, in protest to their arbitrary detention, prison sentence, and alleged torture and ill-treatment by Moroccan authorities in Al-Akhal prison in Al-Ayoun in Western Sahara since their arrest on 1 December 2016. On 14 January 2017, the human rights defenders were placed in solitary confinement in response to their peaceful protest in detention.

El 13 de agosoto de 2020, la Corte de Apelaciones de Francisco Morazán revocó el sobreseimiento definitivo emitido en marzo de 2019, a favor de los defensores de derechos humanos Juan Antonio López, Carlos Leonel George, Reinaldo Domínguez, José Adalid Cedillo y Marco Tulio Ramos. Los defensores son integrantes del Comité Municipal de Defensa de los Bienes Comunes y Públicos (CMDBCP).
