17 November 2023

On 15 November 2023, woman human rights defender Nasrin Sotudeh was released on bail from Evin prison after being subjected to 17 days of arbitrary detention. Although she has been released, the woman human rights defender still faces charges on national security, and for disregarding the mandatory veiling laws, brought against her by Branch 29 of the Tehran Revolutionary court and Branch 1097 of Ershad Judicial Complex, the criminal department II.

19 March 2021

On the evening of 16 March 2021, woman human rights defender Atena Daemi was transferred from Evin Prison to Lakan Prison in Rasht, northern Iran. She had been serving her sentence in the women's ward of Evin Prison since December 2016, during which time she was not granted any leave of absence. No explanation for the transfer was given.

On 25 February 2021, the Supreme Court in Iran rejected the request for a retrial of woman human rights defender Atena Daemi.

8 April 2024

On 6 April 2024, woman human rights defender Hasti Amiri began serving a one-year prison sentence. Alongside human rights defender Zia Nabavi, they were charged with "propaganda activities against the state". This verdict was issued by Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court in June 2023 and confirmed by Branch 36 in October 2023. The charge stemmed from their advocacy in support of students’ rights and their protests against the poisoning of schoolgirls in Iran.

10 March 2022

On 11 February 2022, Egyptian human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek started a hunger strike in protest of his unlawful detention. This is the second time that the human rights defender has gone on hunger strike.

On 17 January 2021, human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek was transferred to Tora Prison hospital due to a deterioration in his health after being on hunger strike for more than 40 days.

On 3 December 2020, Egypt’s State Public Prosecutor ordered the detention of human rights defender Abdelrahman Tarek for 15 days.

10 December 2020

On 9 December 2020, the Court of First Instance of Yaounde administrative centre postponed the hearing of human rights defenders Jean Marc Bikoko, Agnès Adelaide Metougou, Yves Ndjalla Epangue, Jessie Bikoko and Severin Le Juste Bikoko. Their hearing has already been adjourned over 30 times since their arrest on 15 September 2015.

On 9 November 2023, human rights defender Madi Jobarteh was formally charged with “seditious intention, incitement to violence, and false publication and broadcasting”. He had been provisionally released on a D100,000 bail bond on 11 October 2023 while on a hospital bed with an illness. He was asked to report to the police headquarters two weeks later, October 26.

6 September 2023

On 3 September 2023, the lawyer of human rights defenders Jafar Ebrahimi and Kamyar Fakour announced that they have been charged with “disturbing the public order” and “insulting the prison authorities” at Branch 3 of Evin prison court. Both human rights defenders were forcibly transferred to Qezel Hesar prison from Evin prison on the same day, as part of a group of at least ten prisoners.

26 January 2022

On 23 June 2022, woman human rights defender, Narges Mohammadi, was transferred to hospital after displaying symptoms of heart arrhythmia and shortness of breath. After conducting an echocardiogram, doctors prescribed medication with instructions to take them urgently to alleviate the crisis. The woman human rights defender was returned to Qarchak prison from the hospital on the same day. On 27 June 2022, Narges Mohammadi announced to her family that she has received the most urgent prescription of an injection for her shortness of breath after four days delay.

5 September 2023

On 2 September 2023, woman human rights defender and human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir (Imaan Mazari) was granted bail by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad. Imaan Mazari had been jailed since 20 August 2023 on serious offences including sedition and offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The woman human rights defender was granted bail by the Anti-Terrorism Court on 28 August 2023, but was re-arrested a few hours later in a separate case, before finally being released on 2 September 2023.

8 June 2017

On 31 March 2017 Chinese courts handed down verdicts in the cases of three human rights defenders. - Su Changlan (苏昌兰) and Chen Qitang (陈启棠) were found guilty of inciting subversion of state power, and Chen Yunfei (陈云费) was convicted of picking quarrels and causing trouble. The three human rights defenders have all been illegally detained for at least two years, and all were given prison sentences of three years or longer.

On 10 January 2024, the lawyer of Mohammad Habibi announced that the human rights defender has been charged by the Shahryar Revolutionary Court with “gathering and colluding against the national security” after publishing social media posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, protesting against the poisoning of school children in Iran.

On 4 February 2024, the Linyi Municipal Intermediate People’s Court in Shandong province convicted woman human rights defender Li Qiaochu for “inciting subversion of State power” and sentenced her to three years and eight months in prison, to be followed by two years of “deprivation of political rights”.

On 10 March 2021, the Riyadh Appeals Court rejected the appeal that the charge of "communicating with external parties" against woman human rights defender Loujain Al-Hathloul be dropped. The rejection of the appeal and upholding of the charge means that the five year travel restriction against her will remain in place.

Loujain Al-Hathloul was released on 10 February 2021, after spending more than 1,000 days in arbitrary detention.

30 November 2022

On 25 November 2022, the Pervomaisky District Court of the City of Bishkek fined woman human rights defender Aziza Abdirasulova. The Court found woman human rights defender guilty for exhibiting disobedience to the lawful demand of an employee of the internal affairs bodies, a violation envisioned by the Article 128 of the Code of Offenses of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. Aziza Abdirasulova was violently detained while monitoring a peaceful protest in Bishkek on 15 November 2022.

On 4 September 2020, human rights defender Abdel Fattah Bouchikhi was released from prison after completing his four month sentence.

On 28 May 2020, the Court of First Instance of Jorf El Melha sentenced human rights defender Abdel Fattah Bouchikhi to four months' imprisonment. He is charged with defamation regarding a social media post he made in the context of COVID-19.

Human rights defender Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄) (real name: Yang Maodong 杨茂东) has been on hunger strike in prison and his health has severely deteriorated. When his family visited him in early September at the Sihui Prison in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, the human rights defender looked severely emaciated, extremely pale, and weighed around 40kg, down significantly from his normal weight of approximately 70kg.

On 17 January 2024, Atekeh Rajabi was released from Vakilabad prison in Mashhad after having served two months of a six-month prison sentence.

On 25 November 2023, Atekeh Rajabi began a six-month sentence in Vakilabad prison in Mashhad, in the Central Khorasan province in Iran. This corresponds to a summons from the implementation department of Branch 21 of Mashhad Criminal and Revolutionary court received by the human rights defender on 15 November 2023.

30 April 2022

According to the Telegram channel of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations (ITTA), at least fifteen teachers’ rights defenders and members of the ITTA, including human rights defenders Mohmmad Habibi, Jafar Ebrahimi, and Rasoul Bodaghi have remained arbitrarily detained since 30 April 2022. In the early hours of the morning of 30 April 2022, the human rights defenders were arrested, subjected to physical violence, house raids and had their electronic devices confiscated.
