18 July 2016

On 14 and 15 July 2016, human rights defenders Nasser Amin and Reda El Danbouki were prevented from travelling from Egypt to Lebanon and Uganda, respectively, without prior notification. The travel ban follows a trend of harassment by Egyptian authorities against human rights defenders and members of human rights organisations.

In the early morning of 15 July 2016, Reda El Danbouki - Executive director of WCGLA - was prevented from travelling from Borg El Arab Airport in Alexandria to Uganda to carry-out his human rights work. Airport security officers questioned him for three hours about the reason for his travel and then advised him that a travel ban had been imposed against him. In the previous months, Reda was subject to two other travel bans.

On 23 January 2015, human rights defender Mr Gerald Kankya and his colleague Mr Simon Amanyire were beaten by a group of approximately 30 men in Fort Portal, in an attack reportedly coordinated by a local police commander. The attackers attempted to steal documents from the human rights defenders and injured Gerald Kankya after wrestling him to the ground.

On 14 May 2014, human rights defenders and colleagues Mr Moses Omiat and Ms Monica Apilo remain confined to their respective homes for the seventh consecutive day since unidentified armed men came to their offices in an attempt to attack them. Two days before, police protection provided at the homes of the human rights defenders was removed without explanation and no progress has been made in identifying the attackers.
