Take action for Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights

On 10 August 2016, a staff member of Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights received an email from an anonymous person threatening him and his family with death. This is a part of a systematic campaign of incitement, pressure and intimidation against the organisation.

Take action for Chen Wuquan

On 9 February 2018, human rights defender Chen Wuquan (陈武权) and five others from his village were arrested for taking action against illegal land appropriation and reclamation in the tidal zones adjacent to their village. Chen Wuquan and his colleagues were taken into custody after responding to a summons for questioning with local law enforcement. They are currently being held at Mazhang District Detention Centre (also in Zhanjiang City) under suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking troubles”, a charge frequently used by Chinese authorities to justify arresting human rights defenders.

Eritrea: little cause for celebration

Last week the government and people of Eritrea celebrated 25 years since independence. No one can deny the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those Eritreans who fought for the independence of their country, yet sadly this very fact prompts the question as to what exactly there is to celebrate 25 years on.

Take action for the human rights organisations and human rights defenders in Egypt

On 29 May 2016, Egyptian authorities detained human rights defender and journalist Mr Khaled Elbalshy on charges of “disseminating false news and rumours” and “sheltering criminals”. Downtown Cairo Prosecution granted the human rights defender LE10 000 bail, which was paid. He was subsequently released pending trial on 4 June 2016.

Bangladesh Security Attack Indigenous Rights Defender

On 15 February 2018, members of the army and plainclothes police arrived at Rangmati Sadar Hospital in Chittagong Division, where Rani Yan Yan and a companion were visiting two sisters who were recovering from a sexual assault. The soldiers and plainclothes police entered the ward, switched off the lights and attacked Rani Yan Yan and her companion. Rani Yan Yan reported that prior to the attack, she had noticed that her movements in the hospital were being recorded by a number of men in plainclothes using the cameras on their smartphones.

Maysara Abdoun arrested at peaceful protest

On 7 April 2019, the Aswan Misdemeanour State Security Emergency Court sentenced 25 Nubian human rights defenders who were prosecuted in the case known as the “Dofof Trial”, including Maysara Abdoun and Mohamed Azmy, to a suspended fine of 50,000 EGP (approx. 2,600 euros) each.

Case History: Tran Thi Nga

On 29 August 2015, four human rights defenders were among those physically attacked by policemen and a number of unidentified individuals in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, in Vietnam, following a celebration to mark the release of human rights journalist Mr Tran Minh Nhat. Among those attacked were human rights defenders Ms Tran Thi Nga, Mr Truong Minh Tam, Mr Chu Manh Son and Mr Le Dinh Luong.
