I returned last week from a visit to Palestine and Israel. Over six days my colleague and I met with brilliant, tenacious, creative and brave human rights defenders who work non-violently on behalf of others in the brutally occupied West Bank or in an increasingly hostile Israel. We were not allowed access to meet with beleaguered human rights defenders in Gaza.

Palestinian HRDs Endure Israeli Military Assault on Land Day

The Israeli military is nearly 24 hours into a violent assault on tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians and human rights defenders demanding the return of their land in Gaza. Twenty-four hours or 70 years, depending on how you're counting.

On 20 March 2018, Parfait Muhani, Rachel Benie, Justin Mutabesha and Ben Kamuntu were released after two months in detention. On 19 March 2018, the defenders were acquitted by the Magistrates’ Court of Goma, in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On 21 January 2018, the four human rights defenders affiliated with the youth-led civil society movement LUCHA were arrested and detained while preparing for a peaceful pro-democracy demonstration in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
