12 June 2020

On 9 June 2020, Nabeel Rajab was conditionally released from prison. The human rights defender had been imprisoned since June 2016. On 21 February 2018, the Criminal Court of Bahrain sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment, after he had already spent two years in prison regarding media interviews he gave in 2015 and 2016.

On 31 December 2018, the Bahraini Supreme Court upheld a 5-year sentence against Nabeel Rajab.

23 March 2017

On the 7th anniversary of the peaceful popular movement of the Bahraini people which started on 14 February 2011, the NGOs called on the international community to help free human rights defenders in Bahrain, some of whom are jailed for life, and to stop the persecution of journalists simply for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. On 05 February 2018, Abdulhadi's wife Khadija Al-Mousawi tweeted that she visited her husband  who has been targeted and abused in Jaw prison and has been taken to hospital in shackles.

8 January 2021

On 2 January 2021, the State Public Prosecutor ordered the detention of human rights defender Ibrahim Ezz El-Din for an additional 15 days.

On 5 May 2020, the Criminal Court of Cairo renewed the detention of human rights defenders Ibrahim Ezz El-Din, Mohamed El-Baqer, Mohamed Ibrahim, and woman human rights defender Mahienour El-Masry for an additional 45 days.

15 February 2021

On 15 February 2021, the Anti-Terrorism Court in Peshawar denied the bail application submitted by human rights defender Muhammad Ismail, despite his post COVID-19 health situation.

On 8 February 2021, Muhammad Ismail was presented before the Anti-terrorism court in Peshawar. The hearing was adjourned until 15 February. His wife, Uzlifat Ismail, was exempted from attending further court sessions. The human rights defender’s lawyer has applied for bail in the High Court.

7 September 2020

On 6 September 2020, the State Public Prosecution charged human rights defender Ibrahim Metwally Hegazy of ‘taking a leadership of a group’ which he formed in prison during his period of preventive detention. This has been used to justify a renewed order for the human rights defender to be kept under preventive detention.

On 26 August 2020, the Egyptian Criminal Court of Cairo ordered the release under precautionary measures of human rights defender Ibrahim Metwally Hegazy. The nature of the precautionary measures are currently unknown.

18 March 2020

On 12 March 2020, following several hearings of her case, the Military Court of First Instance in Tunis convicted woman human rights defender Najet Laabidi of "attributing to a public official (…) illegal acts related to her job without proof” and fined her with the equivalent of 2.5 euros.

9 May 2016

On 9 May 2016, six human rights defenders including four land rights activists were arrested as they travelled to a demonstration outside Prey Sar prison in the capital Phnom Penh. All six human rights defenders were released on the same day.
