Tips for safe communications

A SECURE, SIMPLE AND FREE PLATFORM.

Jitsi Meet is an encrypted video conferencing software. It is free and open source. The software itself can be trusted, but it is important to use it on a secure server, such as the ones we list below. This tool may reduce the risk of surveillance, interference by other people in calls and selling and mishandling of private information of participants.

NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED

From the computer you join a call using a browser. It is not necessary to download any program on your computer. It works best with Mozilla Firefox or Chromium.

If you want to join the call on your smartphone it will be necessary to download the application “Jitsi Meet” (it is not possible to access the link through your smartphone browser). Jitsi Meet works both on Android and iPhone.

Anyone can download Jitsi Meet software and install it on their own server.

START A MEETING

You can enter the “chat room” through a link, which will be shared by the person who is convening the meeting.

SECURE SERVERS

To create the link and convene the meeting we recommend the following secure servers:

LINK GENERATION

You may generate the link by clicking “Go” beside “Start a new meeting”.

Jitsi Meet can generate a random link or you can create your own.

FEATURES

Microphone and video can be activated and deactivated at the bottom in the middle of the screen.

At the bottom left of the screen there is an icon for the text chat space that can be used by all participants. Beside it, you will find the option to “raise a hand” (to request to speak).

Participants can share a view of their screen to show presentations or documents.

For added security, at the bottom right of the screen, on the “i” icon, a password to join the meeting can be added (which should be shared with participants through a secure channel, such as Signal or encrypted email).

PARTICIPANT IDENTIFICATION

It is recommended that all participants write their name or nickname, which will indicate who is speaking and allow verification that there are not unauthorised participants on the call.

ALERT!

It is important to use Jitsi Meet only on trusted servers. We are recommending some of the servers we trust. If you are planning to use it on some other server, and you are in doubt, please ask digital protection consultants you know. Usage of Jitsi Meet on untrusted servers may compromise the protection of the call.

As with any digital platform, it is not possible to guarantee 100% privacy, but with tools such as Jitsi Meet, risks can be reduced. If there is information you want to discuss that is very sensitive, we strongly recommend that you do not share it through videoconferencing.
