Yolanda Pérez Cruz

Yolanda Pérez Cruz is a Mexican woman human rights defender and member of the indigenous Zapoteca people in the community of San Isidro Aloapam, in Sierra Norte de Ixtlán, Oaxaca. Together with her husband, Pablo López Alavez, Yolanda Pérez is dedicated to the defense of her community, particularly the water and the forest.

Yolanda has been forced to leave her home because of the security situation arising from her being targeted due to her advocacy and campaign for the release of her husband. Since the arrest of her husband, Yolanda has suffered constant and serious threats against her and her family members that led to the issuance of precautionary measures in her favor through the Human Rights Ombudsman People of the People of Oaxaca, though these remain unfulfilled.

Human rights defenders (HRDs) and journalists in Mexico are subject to intimidation, legal harassment, arbitrary detention, death threats, acts of physical aggression, enforced disappearances and killings as a result of their activities in defence of human rights and the exercise of freedom of expression and journalism.
