Wadih Al Asmar

HRD, Secretary General
Lebanese Centre for Human Rights

Lebanon's police take Lebanese [people] for fools. We have absolutely no confidence in them.

Wadih Al Asmar

Wadih Al-Asmar is Co-Founder and President of the Lebanese Centre for Human Rights (CLDH) and Co-Founder and Secretary General of the Franco-Lebanese Movement SOLIDA (Support to Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily). He is also the Co-founder and Secretary General of The Euro-Mediterranean Federation against Enforced Disappearance (FEMED). He has been elected as the President of Euro Med Rights (the Euro Mediterranean Human Rights Network) in June 2018. Since the summer of 2015, Wadih Al-Asmar is has lead the Lebanese social and environmentalist movement YouStink, of which he is one of the founders. YouStink actively participated in organising and supporting social protests during the last Garbage Crisis in Lebanon.

Human rights defenders working in Lebanon have been subjected to detention, prosecution, harassment, threats and travel restrictions. Lebanon ’s fractured political landscape and the legacy of the civil war have created a tense atmosphere in which HRDs work. Some HRDs have been charged with defaming Lebanon ’s reputation, creating civil disorder, and even treason.
