Nihle Kalem is a woman human rights defender who has been volunteering and working with various organizations operating in the field of migration and child studies since 2017. She started to work as a protection worker at the Tarlabaşı Community Center (TTM), where she worked as a volunteer at workshops between 2019-2021. She also participated in various non-governmental organizations' field studies as a researcher. She continues her master's education in the Department of Cultural Studies, specialising in migration, politics of emotions, humanitarianism, and post-colonialism.

Human rights defenders (HRDs) in Turkey have been subjected to judicial harassment, including criminal prosecution, violent attacks, threats, surveillance, prolonged arbitrary detention, and ill-treatment. In the aftermath of an attempted coup in July 2016, the environment for the work of HRDs deteriorated even further.
