Mohamed El Moctar Mahamar is the director of COMADDH, the Coalition for Malian human rights defenders. The organisation – based in Bamako - organises workshops and trainings for HRDs in the country, advocates for better protection of HRD and promotion of human rights, and works on issues such as transitional justice, women’s rights, democracy and accountability.

The security situation is fragile even though a peace agreement was signed between rival ethnic groups, Islamic militant groups and the current government in 2015. This instability severely affects the work and capacity of human rights defenders in Mali, as a climate of fear and insecurity is pervasive, especially in the North.
