Miryam Vargas Teutle is a Nahua indigenous communicator and woman human rights defender from the Choluteca region. She is a member of the Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra y el Agua -  Morelos, Puebla y Tlaxcala (FPDTA-MPT) where she has been working since 2010 in defence of the territory against the energy megaproject Proyecto Integral Morelos. Because of their work, members of the FPDTA-MPT have faced various human rights violations such as judicial harassment, imprisonment, death threats and assassinations such as that of human rights defender Samir Flores Soberanes.

Human rights defenders suffer extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment as well as judicial harassment, threats and stigmatisation. Journalists, lawyers, prosecutors, those defending the rights of women, children, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community, indigenous and Afro-Honduran communities, and those working on environmental and land rights issues are particularly at risk.
