Meylin Zendaya Gamez Mendoza coordinates the human rights network of Marcha Patriótica en Norte de Santander (Patriotic March in North Santander), Colombia, a social and political movement established in 2012 to advocate for a negotiated resolution to the armed conflict, the reparation of victims, the agrarian reform and popular sovereignty.
HRDs in Colombia work in a violent and unsafe environment. They are subjected to threats, intimidation, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, physical assaults, torture, killings, illegal searches of their homes and offices and stigmatisation as a result of their activities in defence of human rights.
