Lawyer Karina Riquelme was again intimidated by Chilean police intelligence agents several times because of her work as a defender of Mapuche Indigenous people rights. She fears for her personal security and feels intimidated. Amnesty International campaign.

States are so afraid of the Mapuche people that they condemn their leaders without evidence. That only shows the great strength of their lonkos, machis and werkenes on both sides of the mountain range, who are a threat to the capitalist interests of the states.

Karina Riquelme Viveros is a Chilean lawyer and human rights defender who works at the SUR Research and Defense Center (CIDSUR), defending people criminalized for taking part of social protests, in particular members of the Mapuche people of southern Chile.

The SUR Research and Defense Center is a grassroots, non-profit social organization, aimed at investigating and documenting  human rights violations, as well as providing legal defense. The Center is specialized in the defense of indigenous rights and child rights and in the legal defense of those prosecuted for their participation in social protests.

Chile has made significant progress in relation to respect for and protection of human rights since the end of the Pinochet dictatorship and it is one of the South-American countries which has had success in bringging those responsible for the attrocities perpetrated during the dictatorship to justice. Despite of all the developments, HRDs still face police abuses, with demonstrations and street protests being violently repressed several times.
